Course Aims and Objectives
This course aims to provide participants with an understanding of how Introductory and Demoted Tenancies are used within Social Housing, and the rights and responsibilities of both landlords and tenants. By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the background to and legislation providing for the use of Introductory and Demoted Tenancies.
- Be aware of good practice and guidance for housing providers using Introductory Tenancies.
- Identify the issues and reasons that can lead to the ending of an Introductory Tenancy.
- Understand the legal process for ending an Introductory Tenancy, and provisions for reviews.
- Identify the types of tenancy that can be demoted, and the types of Demoted Tenancy they become.
- Identify the issues that might lead to a landlord requesting a Demotion Order.
- Understand the legal process for obtaining a Demotion Order, and how this can be linked with Possession Proceedings.
- Understand the rights, responsibilities and security of tenure of occupiers with Demoted Tenancies.
- Be aware of other short and long-term consequences of Demoted Tenancies for tenants.
- Understand what happens at the end of an Introductory or Demoted Tenancy that has been conducted appropriately.
- Know how and where to access relevant documents and other useful resources.
- Identify when further advice or assistance may be necessary and options to access this.
