Course Aims and Objectives
The course discusses the common kinds of psychiatric illness facing older people. It helps participants develop a deeper understanding into illnesses such as schizophrenia, paranoid states and depression. It discusses common psychotic symptoms such as delusions and hallucinations, and how to respond to them. It also lists some treatments and professionals able to help older people with the above disorders. By the end of the course participants will be able to:
- Discuss their understanding of what constitutes mental health and wellbeing
- Identify factors which can promote or undermine mental health as we age, which relate specifically to dementia and depression
- Discuss less common psychotic illnesses, such as schizophrenia, and psychotic symptoms, delusions and hallucinations. Plus helpful interventions for clients with these conditions
- List some ways in which staff can help older clients to maintain mental wellbeing
