Care

Many people live independently with appropriate support or in supported accommodation. However there are those who require some care and this is provided either by Domiciliary care in their homes or within specialised provision. The Registered Homes Act 1984, amended in 1991set out the regulatory framework for this work. These were replaced by the Care Standards Act 2000 and the Care Homes Regulations 2001 which set out the regulatory system for both residential care homes and nursing homes. There are various standards to be met and maintained in terms of the physical attributes of the property, staffing and aspects of the planning and running of the home.

The Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI) is the body which both issues the registration certificate and will inspect and report on an ongoing basis. All registration reports are available at www.csci.org.uk as is a search facility for care homes and services.
